Think of your Cold Air Return as a low pressure vaccuum, which runs day and night. Every air-borne form of dirt and debri will eventually make it into your air ducts. Once in your air ducts it can become a breeding ground for germs and bacteria.

Can ducts become so dirty that they clog?

Great question, and yes they can. We typically find that as a result of construction debris in newer homes. It’s not at all uncommon for the helper to sweep the dust, dirt and construction debris down the heating vents. Over time, it only gets worse as normal household dust builds up and finally restricts airflow through the duct work.

Renting a house …found out it has plenum crawlspace, and system is dirty, we have been sick ever since we moved in, furnace filters last a week….suggestions to landlord?

You can try contacting your landlord to see if he/she will hire us to come out. More and more landlords are starting to understand the importance of a clean HVAC system, not only to keep their tenants happy, but also to maintain the furnace and a/c of their investment property.
